Euro 2024 projections, favorites: How every team will fare

Manchester City boss Ferran Soriano expressed a controversial opinion regarding Real Madrid's success in the Champions League. According to him, Madrid is lucky enough to be champions this season.

Los Blancos indeed had an extraordinary season in 2021/22. Carlo Ancelotti's troops beat a number of top teams on their way to becoming UCL champions, the second trophy after La Liga.

Madrid also beat Man City in the semifinals. Man City was ahead in the two-legged duel, winning 4-3 in the first leg (Etihad) and leading 1-0 in the second leg. However, Madrid showed the magic and eternity of their situation.

Madrid's success is considered extraordinary. They are the most successful team in the Champions League, a trophy that Man City really wants. Even so, Soriano has a different view. According to him, Man City does not need to be too disappointed regarding the failure in the UCL. It takes luck to win the competition, as is the case with Madrid.

"We want the Champions League trophy, but we know that there is a bit of luck involved and we are not obsessed with it," said Soriano."People talk about Madrid's success over the last few years and I think it's fair to say they've been a bit lucky. "In fact, maybe I could say that they deserved to lose to PSG, to Chelsea, to us, or to Liverpool," he added.

Soriano strengthened his opinion about luck by pointing out Madrid's difficulties decades ago. El Real has also had difficulties in European competitions, even though they have an extraordinary squad.

"People forget that in the 80s and 90s, Madrid had a fantastic team, one of the best in history. There was Butragueno, La Quinta, but they couldn't win [Europe]," continued Soriano.

"Milan get rid of them every year. So, somehow they are lucky now, but they have also been unlucky for many years," he concluded.
